AUTOMOBILES AND DRIVER LICENSES

Florida Transplants Must Transfer Driver's License Immediately
Florida state law requires that all licensed drivers new to the state of Florida, be in possession of a valid Florida driver's license immediately upon accepting employment anywhere in the state, regardless of your length of stay.

A Florida license is required of any driver who becomes a Florida resident or registers a child in a Florida public school.

You must register your vehicle in Florida before applying for a driver's license.

Out of state drivers attempting to obtain a Florida license will need to present the valid out of state license, Florida vehicle registration, and a social security card.

New comers to Florida, need only pass a visual examination as long as they are in possession of a valid and current license from another state. If your out of state license is expired, you may be required to pass an actual driving road test. To take a road test, you must provide a road-worthy, Florida-registered and properly insured (bring proof) vehicle in which to take the test. Cars are never provided by the examination office.

Make an appointment! Although not required, appointments are available and could save you hours of wait time often associated with walk in transactions at our seemingly overburdened licensing facilities.

New License: $20.00 (valid for 6 years)
Renewal: $15.00
Replacement: $10.00

Auto Insurance Requirements
After 90 days of legal residency vehicles must be covered by PIP and property damage insurance. For further information, utilize the appropriate vehicle registration contact number listed in the section below.
Vehicle Registration
You must register your vehicle and obtain Florida auto tags, immediately upon establishing legal residency in the state of Florida or by the very day you begin work in this state, or by the day you register a child in school. Which ever, and when ever, any one of the three circumstances come into play, you must have a valid Florida driver's license if you are a licensed driver, and your vehicle must be registered if it is being driven in the sunshine state.

Public School Registration

Your realtor, landlord, or apartment manager can best advise you on which public school your children are meant to attend, but GayOrlando.com would like to provide you with some important information we believe will better prepare you for registration and possibly save you the hassle of a second trip to the school:

You will need to present the following on behalf of each child:

· The child's social security number.

· If the child is entering either Kindergarten or first grade, a birth certificate will be required to show proof of age and social security number.

· Proof of medical examination within the past 12 months.

· Two documents which establish proof of residency of the parent or guardian, such as an electric bill, phone bill, or voter registration card.

· A Certificate of Immunization (HRS Form 680) available from private physicians or the local Public Health Department.

· A copy of the child's last report card, while not required, is appreciated and can help expedite the process.
