Gay-Friendly
Church Opens in Deland
New Hope United Church of Christ meets at 10 a.m. Sundays at
Temple Israel, 1001 E. New York Ave. Communion is served the first
Sunday of every month. Church school is at 9:15 a.m. The church owns
property on Blue Lake Avenue, across from Freedom Elementary School,
where the congregation plans to build a sanctuary. The congregation
called the Rev. Karen G. Thompson Harris to be the first permanent
pastor for this new and growing congregation. Rev. Thompson Harris
has a master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in
New York City. She was ordained in the Baptist church and has served
churches in New York City and in Durham, North Carolina. She is the
first African-American woman to be called to serve as senior pastor
of a church in the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ.
The United Church of Christ has been a leader among denominations
regarding GLBT issues. Several years ago, the church became one of
the first to establish a scholarship fund for gay and lesbian seminarians.
The denomination was the first to ordain an openly gay clergyman.
